Since 1953, Cub Scouts have raced hand-carved wooden cars down a track, learning about craftsmanship and competition. Each Scout starts with a basic kit and personalizes their car with paint, decals, and added weight. The Pinewood Derby kit is an official Scouting America product, tested for quality and includes a wooden block, wheels, and axles. Pack 244 provides every active scout with a kit when they plan to participate in the race. Additional decorative items may be purchased at the Catalina Scout Shop. (20 Tips for planning and hosting the best Pinewood Derby) Whether you aim to be the fastest, most creative, or just have fun, Pinewood Derby celebrates teamwork, family time, and the spirit of friendly competition. Pack 244 hosts the local pack Pinewood Derby around February/March annually.
The Raingutter Regatta is a fun and exciting Cub Scout race where small, handmade boats are floated down a water-filled track, often made from rain gutters. Racers blow air at their boats to make them move. The challenge is to build a boat that moves quickly through the water while staying straight. Learn more about how to build and race a fast Raingutter Regatta boat!
Pack 244 hosts a Raingutter Regatta annually in the Spring around April/May. Scouts are encouraged to collect recyclable items to reuse and repurpose for the race.
Every Scout should learn the value of hard work and earning their own way. The popcorn sale is the perfect opportunity to teach this valuable life lesson and fund the most exciting year of Scouting ever. More than 70% of the popcorn sale supports Pack 244 programs and activities! Many resources for sales are provided to Pack 244 by the Heart of America Council. Popcorn sales usually run between October through December.
Cub Scouting is a family adventure! Volunteering with Pack 244 will help support the many exciting activities and adventures the pack can pursue! Additionally, scouts are required to participate in an annual service project each year as part of their advancements. Often the pack as a whole will participate in a group service project, but dens will also plan and run service opportunities as well.
Our pack is entirely supported by volunteer efforts. We are all parents and guardians of scouts and personally invested in providing safe and enriching activities and education for our children that exhibit the Scout Oath and Law!
The National Summertime Pack award has been reimagined into an elective Adventure named Summertime Fun. This new Adventure may be one of the simplest Adventures, it has one requirement and that is: anytime during May through August participate in a total of three Cub Scout activities.
Pack 244 aims to plan activities from May through August to give scouts an opportunity to earn this achievement. Some past examples include visits with local Firefighters (and truck tours!), water safety, and sustainability/composting activities. The Catalina Council also hosts occasional special events!
